Birthdate: December 29, 1937
Death date: June 04, 2020
Abdulrasul Mohamedhussein Rajabali Bhalloo, affectionately known as “Dachu” or “Uncle Dachoo,” was born on December 29, 1937, in Zanzibar. He grew up in the island’s vibrant cultural and religious environment, where he developed a passion for devotional recitation and cricket. Following the Zanzibar Revolution of 1964, he relocated to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where he would spend the rest of his life contributing to both religious and community life.
In 1967, Abdulrasul married Sherbanu, the daughter of Hassanali Pira Khatau, and together they built a family rooted in faith and service. They were blessed with a son, Hozaiph, who later established a computer sales business in Dar es Salaam. Abdulrasul’s grandson, Ejaz, continues his legacy by reciting Nauhas and Marsias, ensuring that the family’s devotional traditions remain alive across generations.
Abdulrasul was widely respected as a Zakir-e-Imam Hussain (A.S.), known for his mastery of Nauha, Sa’f Ma’atam, and Marsia recitation in Farsi, Urdu, and Kutchi. His voice became a fixture during Muharram and Safar, when he would travel across Tanzania and beyond to recite. He also undertook multiple pilgrimages to Iraq, Syria, and Iran, deepening his spiritual connection to the holy shrines. His recitations were not only performances but acts of devotion that inspired countless listeners.
Beyond his religious contributions, Abdulrasul was a gifted cricketer. He played for the Ithna-Asheries Club in Zanzibar and later for the Union Sports Club in Dar es Salaam. His love for the sport extended to mentoring younger players, arranging friendly matches, and encouraging novices to learn through experience. Known for his humor and encouragement on the field, he often reminded teammates to embrace mistakes as part of growth. His favorite stroke, the cover drive off the back foot, became a signature of his playing style.
On June 3, 2020, Abdulrasul’s life was tragically cut short when he was struck by a speeding commuter bus on Morogoro Road in Dar es Salaam. His funeral took place under COVID-19 restrictions, limiting physical attendance, but his Ziyarat Majlis was conducted virtually, allowing the community to honor his memory. Tributes poured in from across East Africa, with the Africa Federation and community leaders recognizing his lifelong devotion, mentorship, and service.
Abdulrasul Bhalloo’s legacy endures as a symbol of faith, community, and sport. He nurtured religious traditions through his recitations, strengthened communal bonds through cricket, and inspired generations with his humility and humor. His memory continues to live on through his family and the many individuals he touched, leaving behind a legacy of devotion and joy that will not be forgotten.
We request you to remember Marhoom Abdulrasul Mohamedhussein Rajabali Bhalloo with a Sura-e-Fateha gifted to Ummul Banin (sa). May Allah (SWT) grant him maghferat and His infinite grace and mercy as well as place him in the highest stations of Jannah within the proximity of the Ahlulbayt (as).
